Juntetsu Rose Gold Cutting Scissors£388.70

A single-specification 6.0" cutting scissor: SUS440C at 58-60 HRC, a convex grind, a ball-bearing pivot, and a nickel-free rose gold PVD colour coating over a mirror-polished blade. One size, one hand, one decision already made.

The Juntetsu Rose Gold is a solid-blade cutting scissor in SUS440C stainless, hardened to 58-60 HRC, with an offset handle and a convex grind. In the UK we carry it in one specification only: 6.0", right hand.

The colour is a nickel-free decorative PVD colour coating applied over the polished blade. It adds a measure of protection against everyday marking, but no colour film is permanent: it can scratch, wear or lose colour with use, and it will not survive a regrind at the edge. Two honest notes about any coloured coating. It is surface information — it does not change the steel, the edge, or the service interval. And sharpening removes it wherever the edge is reground, so a coloured blade will carry a bright line along the edge after a service.

Nickel-free is a material fact about the coating. It is not a medical assurance and we do not offer it as one: if you have a diagnosed metal allergy, contact us and we will confirm the coating and contact materials with the maker — and speak to a clinician before relying on any of it.

Convex (コンベックス konbekkusu) names the outer grind, with the inner face hollow-ground behind a narrow ride line. The blade line is straight (直刃 chokuba), the line makers associate with capture. Tension runs on a ball-bearing pivot — lower friction than a screw, workable at lower blade tension, and in exchange it wants regular oiling and periodic specialist service.

It ships with the full maintenance kit — tension key, Japanese tsubaki shear oil, silicone finger inserts and a cleaning brush.

How to use

SUS440C at 58-60 HRC. Hardness is a resistance-to-indentation figure; it does not by itself describe sharpness, toughness or edge life.

Convex names the outer grind, with the inner face hollowed so the blades meet at a single travelling contact point rather than along the whole edge. The blade line is straight (直刃 chokuba). Japanese makers describe a straighter line as holding hair with less sliding than a willow or leaf line, which is a stated design intention rather than a measured property. Capture also depends on tension, section size, hair condition and your motion. In practice it suits blunt and base work, perimeter and line work, and detail. Point cutting happens at the tips, so check they meet cleanly.

One build, 6.0", right hand. Maker guidance repeatedly places 5.5" to 6.0" in general all-round territory, with 6.0" read as the bridge toward longer tools. Compare pivot-to-tip reach rather than the inch label.

The ball-bearing pivot replaces sliding contact with rolling elements: low friction, and clamp force that stays even across the stroke instead of drifting as the blades flex.

The finish is a nickel-free rose gold PVD colour coating over a mirror-polished blade. Rose gold is a colour description, not a defined chemistry. A correctly applied PVD film adds a measure of protection, but it does not change the steel's heat treatment and it does not make the tool sharper. The cutting behaviour belongs to the steel, the grind and the geometry underneath.

Sharpening & Care

Wipe after every client with a soft, lint-free cloth folded several times, fingers behind it and off the edge, base to tip. An intact coating adds a measure of protection, but the edge, the pivot, scratches and any worn area are still exposure paths, so the routine does not change.

Never use abrasive polish, a rust eraser, steel wool, household cleaner or a powered buffer on a coated blade. Disinfect by the method your local rule and the product label require, rinse if directed, and dry completely. Chlorine-based products carry a pitting risk on stainless. Never case a damp pair.

Clean the pivot before adjusting, because grit scores the bearing races, then oil with the supplied tsubaki oil; bearing pivots want nightly oiling. Drop test: vertical, tips up, held by the finger ring, thumb blade opened to about 90 degrees and released gently. Falling fully shut is too loose, barely moving is too tight, and between those the trade disagrees, so let cut feel decide. Use the supplied key only, in sixteenth-of-a-turn steps. Never over-tighten: that brinells the races, denting the rolling path permanently. Gritty action that no adjustment fixes means the bearing pack, not the screw.

Convex is professional-sharpening-only; generic sharpening flattens the hollow and the ride line for good. Expect sharpening to remove the colour film wherever the abrasive reaches the edge. That is normal, not a defect. Store closed, cased and dry.

How this pair cuts

Edge geometry decides technique — and maintenance.

Convex 蛤刃 hamaguri-ba Razor edge for slide and wet cutting, designed for a quiet, low-resistance cut. This pair
Semi-convex Sharp yet forgiving — the versatile all-rounder, easier to maintain than full convex. This pair
Bevelled 段刃 dan-ba Durable workhorse edge with audible feedback — suits blunt cutting and training. This pair
Sword blade 剣刃 ken-ba Ridged spine adds power through thick, dry sections and scissor-over-comb work. This pair
Convex edges need specialist sharpening: a standard grind can flatten the profile. Use a sharpener experienced with convex scissor blades.
