Ichiro Ergo Apprentice Scissor Kit5.5" Convex Slice Cutting & 6.0" Thinning£323.70

Ichiro Ergo Apprentice Scissor Kit pairs a 6.0" standard thinning tool with a cutter selected at 5.5" or 6.0". Made in Japan, the Japanese stainless alloy pair reaches 56–58 HRC and carries offset handles with mirror polish; the 5.5" cutter has a convex edge.

Ichiro Ergo Apprentice Scissor Kit places a 6.0" standard thinning tool beside a cutter selected at 5.5" or 6.0". Made in Japan, both Japanese stainless alloy pieces reach 56–58 HRC and carry offset handles with mirror polish. The 5.5" cutter carries a convex edge.

Use the standard thinning pattern within an established outline; it removes weight without recutting that line. The set, tension key, maintenance cloth and care guide come in a reusable cushioned box. A premium travel case accompanies the maintenance kit of Japanese tsubaki shear oil, silicone finger inserts and a cleaning brush.

How to use

Select the 5.5" or 6.0" cutter and keep the 6.0" standard thinning tool for work inside the established outline. The shared Japanese stainless alloy, offset handle and mirror polish describe the pair, while the two roles remain separate.

A thinning blade cuts only the strands seated in its teeth and leaves the rest, allowing weight to come from inside the section. Tooth count or pattern alone cannot determine how much a close removes because width, spacing and blade arrangement also matter.

Begin away from the root, close once, comb through and inspect before returning to the same place. Repeated closes can show as a step; if the tool pulls, folds or closes unevenly, check its mechanical action before changing technique.

Sharpening & Care

Use the supplied cleaning brush to clear hair and product from between the thinner's teeth rather than a fingertip. Check each tooth space for packed material, because trapped debris can make the tool snag and seem dull even when the obstruction, rather than the edge, is causing the problem.

Choose a sharpener who services tooth geometry as well as a plain edge, and ask about that capability before leaving the thinner for service. A toothed tool needs its own service method rather than treatment as a plain cutting blade.

During the first few haircuts, the washer beneath the screw may seat and compress, leaving a factory setting looser. Recheck each tool during early use; if tension has changed, make only a small adjustment and use the drop test to check it.

Built around your grip

The handle decides how your wrist, elbow and shoulder feel at 6pm.

How this pair cuts

Edge geometry decides technique — and maintenance.

Convex 蛤刃 hamaguri-ba Razor edge for slide and wet cutting, designed for a quiet, low-resistance cut. This pair
Semi-convex Sharp yet forgiving — the versatile all-rounder, easier to maintain than full convex. This pair
Bevelled 段刃 dan-ba Durable workhorse edge with audible feedback — suits blunt cutting and training. This pair
Sword blade 剣刃 ken-ba Ridged spine adds power through thick, dry sections and scissor-over-comb work. This pair
Convex edges need specialist sharpening: a standard grind can flatten the profile. Use a sharpener experienced with convex scissor blades.
