Mina Umi Hair Cutting & Thinning Scissor Set4.5" Cutting & 6.0" Thinning · Right£193.70

The Mina Umi set pairs a selectable cutter with a fixed 6.0" 30-tooth thinner, both in SUS440C at 58 HRC. Cutter sizes run from 4.5" to 7.0", with right-handed pairings throughout and left-handed choices from 5.0".

A selectable cutter and fixed 6.0" thinner make up the Mina Umi set. Cutter sizes run from 4.5" to 7.0", with right-handed pairings throughout and left-handed choices from 5.0". Both tools share SUS440C at 58 HRC, convex edges, offset handles, mirror polish and key-adjustable screws.

Each pairing changes the cutter size and hand; its 6.0" thinner follows that same hand. A straight blade profile applies to the cutter.

The thinner’s 30 V-groove teeth select strands inside the established outline. Tooth count alone cannot predict take-off, so placement and a test section remain more useful than an assumed rate.

A maintenance cloth, care guide and reusable storage box accompany the set, with a tension key and travel case as bonus extras. The left- and right-handed choices give a student a coordinated cutter and thinner without changing hand between tools.

How to use

Select the cutter by size and hand, then keep the matching 6.0" thinner beside it. Both tools use SUS440C at 58 HRC, convex edges, offset handles, mirror polish and key-adjustable screws.

Right-handed cutter choices begin at 4.5"; left-handed choices begin at 5.0". The thinner remains fixed and follows the hand of the chosen cutting pair.

Its 30 V-groove teeth take selected strands within the section. Enter away from the root, close once, comb through and look before repeating so the established outline stays under the cutter’s control.

A straight blade line on the cutter holds hair as the blades close, supporting blunt and base work. The thinning tool has its own toothed role, so use the two pieces deliberately rather than expecting matching technique.

Sharpening & Care

Stainless steel is not rust-proof. Keep residue and moisture away from the mirror-polished edges and pivots, and avoid soaking, steam or abrasive cleaning unless the maker permits it.

Use the drop test only after a pivot is clean and oiled. Release the thumb blade from roughly a right angle; a full fall is too loose, while almost no movement is too tight. Adjust in small keyed steps.

A left-handed pair goes to a sharpener with verified experience of mirrored blade stacks. If a tool is dropped, keep it closed and inspect under strong light without running a finger or nail along the edge.

Store both pairs closed, dry and separated in the supplied travel case so their blades cannot strike other metal tools.

Both Umi tools carry convex edges. A convex edge goes only to a sharpener who works convex scissor geometry on water-cooled scissor equipment, or back to the maker. Never home-hone a convex edge: a stone, a strop or a knife sharpener flattens the hollow inner face and the ride line, and once that geometry is ground away it does not come back.

Built around your grip

The handle decides how your wrist, elbow and shoulder feel at 6pm.

How this pair cuts

Edge geometry decides technique — and maintenance.

Convex 蛤刃 hamaguri-ba Razor edge for slide and wet cutting, designed for a quiet, low-resistance cut. This pair
Semi-convex Sharp yet forgiving — the versatile all-rounder, easier to maintain than full convex. This pair
Bevelled 段刃 dan-ba Durable workhorse edge with audible feedback — suits blunt cutting and training. This pair
Sword blade 剣刃 ken-ba Ridged spine adds power through thick, dry sections and scissor-over-comb work. This pair
Convex edges need specialist sharpening: a standard grind can flatten the profile. Use a sharpener experienced with convex scissor blades.
